| Aston watching the other team score. He was just rubbing his head but it turned out the be the perfect picture :) |
Let me back up a bit. The players were released from school at 2pm to get changed and into cars and on the road to the game. Max was going to drop by on the way there to pick Aston and I up. He called at 2:30, 15 minutes later then expected saying he was finally on his way. When we got home, he told me that they were down 4 players and one of his players was disqualified for the rest of the season due to grades. We jumped in the car and got to the field within 15 minutes of leaving the house...thanks to the toll road.
As we got there, Elmo (one of the players, it's a nickname) came up and said, so they only have one team and are only playing one game. Wesley, Maxwell's brother, is coaching the 7th grade team and they were supposed to be heading towards us soon. Max jumped on the phone to tell them to figure it out and he started his team meeting, reassigning players to different positions and getting things figured out.
Then, we walked to one field, started getting set up and the park officials said we couldn't play there (the school doesn't have permission but uses it. Yesterday, they got kicked off.) So we walked to another field in the back of an elementary school and waited for that to get set up. The game started 30 minutes after it was supposed which gave Max and Jordan (assistant coach) a chance to get things worked out with the players.
The guys played great, had so much effort and were so excited. I started tearing up when one of the players intercepted the ball with 2 minutes left in the game and 3 of the other guys came and gave him a big hug. It was so fun seeing them encourage each other. At the end, a few players started doing cartwheels and the atmosphere, that had been so sad the last few weeks, finally was cheery. Let's hope things continue this way for the next 5 games and that they can get into the playoffs. It has been so much fun watching them play and watching Max coach!
